March of the following year I was drafted. Because of my police training
I was sent to the 502nd Military Police Company at Fort Hood, Texas. I
started working patrols inside the fort. Later I worked plain cloths as
a Provost Marshal Investigator.

For a while I worked as a carpenter framing houses. I always meant to
write a book, but I never got that chance until I had an accident. I was
on a ladder working on a home when the ladder fell and my right arm went
through a plate glass window. I cut open my wrist, and severed a tendon.
I had surgery to repair my arm and was put in a splint for two months.
During that time I played around with a typewriter and wrote a few
stories about scuba diving. I sold these stories to Skin Diver Magazine.
This early success encouraged me to write more. Here was my chance to
finally write that book!
